We Know: How to Buy a Work Bench

About Work Benches

Most workbenches are made with steel, wood, or a combination of both. The work surface is often made of composite materials, aluminum, laminated finish, or steel. Workbench sizes vary, though most range between 48" to 120" in width, and 48" to 36" for height. Many workbenches incorporate an ergonomic design for worker safety and comfort.

Work benches can be of a custom design or are standard stock. Prices vary according to size, material, and design but range anywhere from $100.00 to $2,000.00. Keep in mind that if you have to pay for shipping costs, the heavier the workbench, the more it will cost.

Types of Work Benches

Work benches are designed for many purposes and types of use. Though some workbenches are adequate for many applications, some are not. Here are the main types of work benches:

  • General purpose workbench. These are basic workbenches that can be used for a variety of purposes.
  • Modular workbench. When you need to be able to add more components later, or need to be able to arrange the workbench in a certain configuration, modular workbenches can be the solution.
  • Electronic workbench. Designed for working with electronic parts sensitive to electricity, these workbenches typically have wood, plastic, or anti-static tops. Some have an apron along the front and top to eliminate the risk of top deflection.
  • Folding leg workbench. These are convenient for easy storage.
  • Mobile workbench. A mobile workbench is designed to pack and carry easily for setup in the field.
  • Packing station workbench. These are often customized and accessorized by workflow and can include computer screen and keyboard holders, shelves, paper roll holder, electrical outlets, and document holders.

Workbench Features

Work benches come in all sizes and shapes, depending on their function. Some have more features than others. Here are some of your choices:

  1. Shelves, drawers, and cabinets. These are usually located at the bottom of the workbench, though some have overhead and side storage.
  2. Lockable sliding doors and cabinets.
  3. Back and end plates for containment of materials and objects.
  4. Adjustable height.
