We Know: How to Buy a Tennis Racquet

When Shopping for a Tennis Racquet

On average, good racquets cost anywhere from around $50 to $100. Keep these things in mind when shopping for a racquet:

  • Skill level: Beginners should use a larger racquet because it will be easier to make contact with the ball.
  • Strings: Thin strings provide you a better feel for the ball, but thick strings last longer.
  • Frame: Frames are either composite or aluminum or both, which is called fused. The lighter the racquet, the faster and more powerful your swing will be. Fused racquets are a nice compromise between composite and aluminum and overall are generally cheaper and longer lasting.
  • Grip: A proper grip should minimize the shock you feel from ball contact and it also affects overall comfort. Practice swinging the racquet. Too small a grip and you may have trouble controlling the racquet, too big a grip and you may have less spin on your serves.
  • Price: Today's tennis racquets take advantage of several technologies, including power-boosting and anti-vibration. The more options and features a model has, the more it will cost.
  • Length: Racquet length affects power and control. The longer the racquet, the more leverage and power you can obtain. They also allow you to reach balls a longer distance away. Modern racquets are made with lighter and stronger materials than they used to be, which means you can get away with a longer racquet more easily than before. Smaller racquets are 27 or 28 inches. Longer racquets are from 28.5 to 29 inches.
