We Know: All About Security Gates and Fences
Purposes for Security Gates and Fences
Some homeowners use security gates and fences to enclose their property for security,
decoration, or to keep children or animals from straying into the street. Security gates
can be manually operated, remote-controlled, or both. Gates can be installed at walkway
entrances, yard entrances, or at the beginning of a driveway.
Materials Used for Security Gates and Fences
Security gates and fences are made from a variety of materials, and the choice is usually
dependent on purpose and budget:
- Wood. The wood used for security gates and fences can come in several types. If cedar
is used, it does not need to be painted, but is more expensive than pine. Pine is cheaper but
can chip, crack, and needs to be protected with paint or finish and may require annual
maintenance.
- Bamboo. Typically, bamboo fences are custom made and can be built in a variety of
styles, including Asian or African. They can be used along sidewalks, walkways,
or in gardens.
- Steel. Steel is especially strong though it is usually more expensive
than other materials. It is often powder coated with a
painted finish for protection against weathering. Steel is most often used when security is
of primary importance. Steel posts or rods can be quite decorative, with scalloped tops or other
designs.
- Aluminum. Though aluminum is not as strong and sturdy as steel, it is usually much
cheaper and can be quite decorative. Most aluminum fences and gates do not require painting or annual maintenance.
- Vinyl. Vinyl fencing and gates tend to be much cheaper than other materials like steel
and require less maintenance than wood because they usually do not need to be painted. Vinyl fences
and gates come in a variety of colors.
Buying Tips for Security Gates and Fences
When shopping for security gates or fences, keep these things in mind:
- Measure the height and length of where you intend to install the fence or gate. If you plan
to include a gate, make sure there is sufficient space for it to swing open.
- If you cannot afford to purchase and install all of the fencing,
decide if it is feasible to do it in sections, and if so, prioritize the sections.
- Inquire about shipping and handling charges. If you can deliver the fence or gate yourself,
you may be able to save money.
- How much of the fence or gate is pre-assembled? Will you be able to install it yourself,
or do you need to hire someone? If you are purchasing a kit, make sure you have all the necessary
tools to assemble it.
- Many areas have zoning restrictions on fences and gates, particularly with regard to height.
Make sure that your fence or gate will be legal.
