We Know: How to Buy a Robe

About Robes

Robes are available in varying lengths, from full to knee length. They can be styled or plain, and provide warmth or simply cover your body. Robes are generally one size fits most or all, with slight variances in style to accommodate men or women though many robes are unisex.

Tips for Buying a Robe

When shopping for a robe for yourself or as a gift, consider the following:

  • Ease of cleaning. Is the robe machine washable or does it have to be dry cleaned?
  • Weight. Generally, the lighter the robe the more comfortable it is. Some materials like Japanese cotton yarn are lightweight but very warm.
  • Durability. Most robes are made of terry cloth cotton fiber which can last fairly long if the weave is good, but many synthetic materials sucy as polyester are very stain resistant and long lasting.
  • Choose your material. More expensive robes may have a soft chenille interior and sateen exterior. Terry cloth is large looped cotton for a soft, comfortable feel. Many synthetic materials are now available that simulate the feel of traditional materials like cashmere but are more durable and machine washable.
  • Reversible. Some robes are reversible for a different look or feel.
