We Know: All About Recliners

What is a recliner?

A recliner is a chair that can be tilted back from so that the seated person can comfortably lie back. Many recliners have an attached footrest that rises to further relax the legs. When did recliners originate? Patents for reclining chairs date back as early as 1813. By 1855, the prototype had been refined until Cabinetmaker George J. Henkels The "Morris Chair" designed by William Watt in 1883 and manufactured by Morris and Company, was the first chair to be promoted as a chair for relaxation. In 1929, La-Z-Boy Incorporated introduced the concept of the easy chair. Their unique reclining mechanism, which they guaranteed for the life of the chair allowed them to take the recliner market by storm. These recliners made by La-Z-Boy are the essentially the same recliners sold today. La-Z-Boy however did not add the footrest to the recliner chair. Barcalounger was responsible for this addition.

How did recliner styles evolve?

The model of the earliest recliners was based on the tendency of American to put up their feet and lean back in their chairs. Wood slat chairs were fashioned that could lean back at the will of the user. As this chair was seasonal for outdoor use, it did not become popular until it was upholstered.

When were recliners most popular?

Recliners gained in popularity around the same time as the TV became fashionable, in the 1950s. They went out of style along with the avocado refrigerator. In the 1970ās they were declared bulky and ugly and although purchased, were hidden from public view. New sleeker designs have brought recliners back into the living rooms in the last couple of decades, where they have remained in many shapes, sizes, and styles.

What types of recliners are available for purchase?

There are three basic styles of recliners.

  • You can purchase a traditional recliner for relaxing and watching TV.
  • You can purchase a geriatric recliner if you need extra lumbar support, and need ergonomic armrests. These cost more and are usually reserved for the elderly.
  • You can purchase a lift recliner if you have a hard time standing up to injury, arthritis or other difficulty standing up. Lift chairs allow for greater mobility and independence in old age.

What styles of recliners are available?

Recliners are available in many styles for many tastes. La-Z-Boy, one of the more popular recliner manufacturers currently markets their recliners as "Not your father's recliner", some of the styles they have available are:
