We Know: How to Buy a Quilt

About Quilts

A quilt can do more than provide warmth-- it can brighten a room and transform the look of any bed. Though quilts were exclusively handmade at one time, many are now machine-made. The quality of quilts varies considerably, depending on price, manufacturer or maker, and size. Some quilts are considered heirlooms and are displayed on walls as pieces of artwork. The traditional style quilt is one of squares "patched together" to form the whole quilt. The squares were leftover scraps of material that were filled with used women's hosiery. Homemade quilts are priceless or very expensive when available whereas machine made, imported quilts are often quite cheap though the quality varies.

Optional Quilt Features

A quilt may have one or more of the following features:

  • Machine washable. Some quilts are made of material that requires dry cleaning.
  • Dryer safe.
  • Pre-washed to eliminate risk of shrinking.
  • Color-safe fabric. This prevents the colors from fading after repeated washings.
  • Quality stitching.
  • Embroidered. For additional decoration.
  • Reversible.
  • Overstuffed batting. Provides additional warmth and creates a fuller look.
  • Tailored bed skirt.
  • Pillow shams included.
