We Know: All About Lamps

What are lamps and where did the word lamp come from?

Originally, a lamp was a light source from an open flame like a lantern or candle. Technically, and more specifically, a lamp is the light bulb itself. The most popular use of the word lamp refers to electric lamps that sit on a table, desk, or on the floor.

If I have general lighting, why do I need lamps?

Although most rooms already have general lighting installed, lamps are great when you just want to illuminate a small area for task lighting, accent lighting, convenience or energy efficiency.

How should I use lamps for task lighting?

Use a lamp for task lighting to increase your productivity, improve your personal viewing comfort, and give you greater control of individual lighting levels. For working at a desk, do not place your lamp directly in front your desk. Put the lamp to the left if you are right-handed or to the right if you are left-handed. For reading in bed, table lamps should be placed either side of the bed give light that is both soft and suitable for reading purposes. For tasks, choose lamps that take full spectrum bulbs for natural light that is easy on the eyes.

How do I use lamps to create accent lighting?

Using lamps for accent lighting allows you to use them only when and where they are necessary. Lamps for accent lighting are often works of art within themselves. Decorative accent lamps come in many shapes and forms. They are great for creating ambiance, highlighting art or other features. For accent lighting, quartz-halogen lamps are often an excellent choice. They provide bright lighting, and are available in many dramatic designs. When equipped with dimmers they give you full control for your lighting needs.

How do I use lamps for energy efficiency?

You can save energy, and thus money when using lamps to illuminate an area for a particular task like cooking, reading, or deskwork. When less light is needed, less energy is used and when the task is done, the light can simply be turned off. In addition, using decorative or high efficiency bulbs in your lamps will boost your savings.

Are there safety issues I should be concerned with when using lamps?

You should avoid using freestanding lights in a young child's room, as they can be pulled over. Special care should also be used when using halogen table or torchiere lamps. Never allow Torchiere Halogen Lamps to be placed where either the bulb itself or its protective glass covering or grating may come near any combustible materials, including curtains and other cloth window treatments.
