We Know: All About Internet TV

What is Internet TV?

As the popularity of the Internet increases and becomes the central focus of many households, it has begun to incorporate television. As computer technology improves, the quality of television programming over the Internet also improves. As the number of people using Internet television increases, the costs will decrease. As the audience for Internet television increases, so too does the availability of programming. Traditional programming is already available online, as are programs only available on the Internet and not viewable on television even with satellite or subscription fees.

Why doesn't everyone have Internet television?

Eventually, anyone with online access probably will have Internet television. In the meantime, streaming technology has to improve. Streaming is the term used to describe the relay of information over the Internet to your computer. When the image and/or audio is choppy, the information isn't getting to your computer quickly enough. There are lots of reasons why that might happen. Until most users have quality streaming connections, there won't be a large enough audience to make Internet television mainstream or find a place in most households.

There's an enormous amount of money made in pay-per-view and subscription programming. Those who control access to pay-per-view and subscription programs won't make them available on Internet television until they can be assured they'll make at least the same amount of money. This is similar to the issue of downloading music for a price rather than getting that music for free.

Types of Internet TV

Presently, these are the choices for Internet television:

  • Television broadcasters that transmit simultaneously on TV and the Internet.
  • Television broadcasters (especially news stations) that make certain portions of their programming available on their website.
  • Television broadcasters that make content available only on their website.
  • Internet-only television programs or content not available using a traditional TV set.
