We Know: How to Buy a Food Processor
Food Processors
There are many choices for food processors. Professional kitchens use high-end
food processors that are probably larger and more expensive than the average home's needs.
However, a few food processor manufacturers offer a professional series of food processors
that are reasonably priced and will work well for a small professional kitchen or the home
cook who now and then needs to prepare a large amount of food.
Food Processor Features
Some food processors have more features than others, but here is an overview of what is
available:
- Variable processor speeds. Most offer at least two speeds plus pulse.
- Types of processing. Look for a machine that at a minimum will chop, mix, and mince. Another
handy feature is reverse for shredding and slicing. Some have additional attachments for slicing,
puréeing, grating, or whipping.
- A minibowl insert.
- Several colors from which to choose. Standard colors like black or white are available as
well as stainless steel, but other colors are available too. Chances are you can match the food
processor color to your kitchen's decor.
- Some food processors are also capable of blending liquids, which saves counter space because
you can eliminate the blender.
- A blade and disc holder for additional blades.
- Cup capacity varies. Most models range from two to fourteen cups.
- Detachable parts that are dishwasher safe.
- Touchpad controls.
- Price. The lower end, smaller food processors can be purchased for around $18. Higher end models
sell for about $155.
- Power. Most food processors are under 450 watts. The heavier-duty models can be as many as
750 watts.
- A chute opening that allows you to feed in whole foods instead of first prepping the food for
the food processor.
