We Know: All About Flat Screen TVs

What is a Flat Screen TV?

A flat screen TV display is a flat panel. There are two kinds of flat screen displays: plasma and LCD. Their screens are usually less than four inches thick.

CRTs (cathode ray tubes) are not flat screens. A CRT-based rear-projection TV is very large and can weigh as much as a hundred pounds. As flat screens come down in price and increase in popularity, CRTs are becoming less common.

About Plasma Flat Screen TVs

Things to know about them:

  • Most plasma flat screens have especially wide screens.
  • Most plasma flat screens are between 42"-61".
  • Cheaper plasma TVs often have enhanced-definition screens instead of high definition. This means less quality contrast resulting in a loss of image detail.
  • Many plasma sets include wing speakers but others have only the video display and require the addition of a TV tuner.
  • Most plasma TVs have a higher contrast ratio than LCD TVs.
  • Most plasma TV prices range from $1,200-$13,000.

About LCD Flat Screen TVs

Things to know about them:

  • Most LCD flat screens are between 15"-65".
  • Most LCD TVs include speakers and a TV tuner.
  • LCD TVs are usually thicker in size than plasma TVs.
  • LCD TVs do not run as hot as plasma TVs.
  • Prices range from $200 to $1,500.
