We Know: How to Buy a Filing Cabinet

About Filing Cabinets

Most filing cabinets are metal, and constructed with aluminum. Some cabinets are pre-assembled while others you will have to assemble yourself. Some office supply stores sell floor models which are fully assembled and may even be available at a discount.

Prices range from $100-$600, depending on the cabinet's size, the material used, and the manufacturer.

Filing Cabinet Options and Features

Filing cabinets come with a variety of options and features, including the following:

  • Number of drawers. Most cabinets have from two to five drawers.
  • Color. Black, grey, and tan are the most common, but there are other colors available that can blend in with your existing furniture and room decor.
  • Horizontal or vertical. Depending on how you need to arrange your work space, filing cabinets can have drawers stacked horizontally or vertically. The top surface of horizontal cabinets can also serve as a work space.
  • Material. Though the majority of filing cabinets are made of metal, some are wood such as oak or maple.
  • Locking drawers. For security purposes, some cabinets have drawers that are lockable.
  • Drawer size. Some are letter size, while others are legal size, and some can accommodate both.
  • High drawer sides or hanging file bars. Either method can make it possible to hang folders. Check the manufacturer's description to be certain which folder sizes will work.
