We Know: How E-Books Work and Where to Find Them

What is an e-book?

An e-book is an electronic book, otherwise known as a digital version of a printed book.

What are the main advantages and disadvantages of e-books?

The advantages to e-books are that they take up much less space than printed books, they're cheaper than printed books, the page text can be enlarged in most cases, the text is usually searchable, and they can be adapted for text-to-speech software.

The disadvantages to e-books are that they can be harder for the eye to focus on as compared to printed books, the battery life of the reading device is limited, and the disks on which the data is stored can be damaged easily and make it unreadable. Another disadvantage is that e-books stored on computers whose hard drives die or are destroyed by a virus, those e-books are at risk for being lost.

Is there more than one type of e-book?

As with other types of digital files, there are several formats in which e-books are available. Depending on the file format used, an e-book may be readable by a reading device that's also called an e-book. Some formats can be read on a PDA or other type of handheld device, and other types can be read on a computer. There are almost two dozen digital formats for e-books. Some of the most common e-book file formats are:

  • HTML: This is the language used to encode many web pages. E-books written in HTML can be read using any web browser.
  • TEI Lite: An e-book format that relies on XML.
  • FictionBook: Another XML type of e-book format.
  • Adobe PDF: Viewers to read this e-book format can be downloaded from Adobe and other sites for free.
  • Microsoft Reader: Free e-book software reader from Microsoft that can be downloaded from their site.

How does the process of getting an e-book work?

Online booksellers make e-books available to registered readers for download. After you download it to your computer, you can read the e-book.
