We Know: How to Buy a Computer Mouse

About Computer Mice

When shopping for a computer mouse, make sure it's compatible with the operating system of your computer. Most newer computers come with at least one USB port which newer mice use, but if your computer only has a PS/2 port for the mouse, you'll need to buy a PS/2 mouse or get a USB to PS/2 port adapter, which are included with some mice.

Types of Computer Mice

A computer mouse may be one or more of the following:

  • Mouse with a cord. Traditional mouse that plugs into the USB or PS/2 port.
  • Cordless mouse. A wireless mouse that receives signals from a transmitter that you plug into a USB or PS/2 port.
  • Mini mouse for notebooks/laptops. Smaller size designed for use in cramped spaces as often is true when working on a notebook/laptop. Mini mice are also good for children or those with small hands.
  • Optical mouse. Uses a beam of light instead of a trackball and doesn't require a mousepad.
  • Trackball mouse. Uses the traditional trackball to move cursor.

Optional Features

A computer mouse may have one or more of the following features:

  • Scroll or tilt wheel: Allows you to scroll sideways. Some models will also zoom in on the page.
