We Know: How to Buy A Comforter

What Size Comforter Do You Need?

The first thing you should do when you begin to shop for a comforter is to figure out just what size comforter you are in the market for. Beds come in several sizes ranging from Twin to King and your comforter should never be for a smaller size bed than you own.

You can place a bigger sized comforter on your bed, so before you purchase a comforter, decide if you want it to fit snuggly on top of the bed or if you would like it to hang down around the mattress. Then adjust your size accordingly.

How Much Warmth Do You Require?

Comforters come in all sorts of different thickness levels and with several kinds of filling. Each of these factors influence the amount of warmth a comforter provides. If you are looking for a covering that isn't too hot, for those warm spring nights, choose a comforter that has a thin cotton filling. Cotton is a natural fiber that breathes, allowing air to circulate through the blanket, helping to keep your body cool.

If you are looking for a comforter to keep you warm on those chilly nights, it is better to choose one that has a synthetic filling. If you want to stay away from synthetic fabrics, a down filled comforter is always a great alternative.

What Kind of Accessories Do You Need?

Choosing a comforter opens up a whole realm of decorative possibilities. Spread out on a bed, most comforters don't cascade all the way to the floor, so the purchase of a complimentary dust ruffle is necessary unless you want people to be able to see under your bed. Unlike bed spreads, comforters don't have enough excess length to be folded over your pillows when you make the bed. As a result, your pillows will show and you might want to purchase some pretty matching cases or decorative shams.

If you want a completely coordinated look, you may choose to by matching decorative pillows and neck rolls to place on top of your comforter. Some people prefer to keep their comforters clean by covering them with a duvet that can be stripped off and thrown in the wash when needed.
