We Know: All About Coffee Makers

What is a coffee maker?

There are several types of coffee makers and each works a little differently:

  • Drip: This is the most common type. Water drips from a holding tank into a filter filled with ground coffee. The water passes through the coffee grinds into the carafe which holds the brewed coffee.
  • French press: A plastic or glass carafe holds the ground coffee. Boiling water is poured into the carafe and the coffee is allowed to steep. The press has a plunger which is used to separate the brewed coffee from the ground beans.
  • Percolators: Boiled water is pushed up through a tube and flows out into a filter of ground coffee. When it's done, where the boiled water was it's now the brewed coffee.

Optional Features for Coffee Makers

Some of the features available with coffee makers:

  • 24-hour clock/timer: To automatically brew coffee at a set time.
  • Decalcification indicator: Tells you when the inside has calcified enough that you should clean the inside of the machine.
  • Variable cup brewing: Gives you the option of brewing a few cups, or many cups.
  • Automatic shut off: Prevents the carafe from overheating and possibly breaking.
  • Additional espresso machine: Some models have the espresso feature built into the machine.
  • Pause feature: Keeps the coffee from spilling as you take the carafe away to pour.
  • Dishwasher safe and removable parts: Easier for cleaning.
