We Know: How to Buy a CB Radio
Types of CB Radios
There are two types of CB radios. One is a base set that is mounted beneath the dash of
a vehicle or else used in the home or office.
The second type is a mobile or handheld unit.
Choosing the Right CB Radio
To narrow down the vast selection of CB radios and find the right one for you, keep
these points in mind:
- Decide if you want a portable hand-held unit, or one for your home or vehicle.
- Every CB radio needs an antenna. CB radios installed in buildings use larger
antennas than CB radios used in vehicles. Verify that there are no zoning or other restrictions
that will prevent you from installing the antenna. If you cannot use an antennae, consider buying
a handheld CB radio. To use it, you may be restricted to going outside to get a decent
transmission.
- Power supply units for CB radios vary depending on where it will be located. Radios for
vehicles plug into a cigarette lighter or other 12-volt power outlet whereas units in buildings
use standard wall outlets.
CB Radio Features
The selection and types of CB radio features vary by radio manufacturer and price, but the
following is a general guideline:
- Number of channels. Most CB radios have either 40 or 120 channels.
- Instant channels. Most CB radios have at least two default instant channels. The two
most common are channel 9 for emergencies, and channel 19 for information. Channel 19 is also
the channel that truckers use.
- Weather Alert. This allows you to receive NOAA's latest weather broadcast.
- PA or Public Address system. Allows you to connect your CB to a special speaker for use
as a public address system.
- Automatic Scan. The CB radio automatically monitors all its channels simultaneously
until it locates one that is in use.
- Detachable face plate. Just like with some car stereos, a CB radio may come with a
theft deterrent detachable face plate.
- Upper and lower sideband. Having both an upper and lower sideband effectively doubles
your radio's channel capability.
