We Know: Tips for Buying a Car Stereo
About Car Stereos
Car stereos can be a huge investment, but also important is the desire to have a quality system in order to enjoy
your music. Buying a car stereo to replace the originally installed model can be a frustrating experience if you end
up with something you don't want.
When Shopping for a Car Stereo
Keep these things in mind:
- Know the make, model and year of your vehicle before making any purchase. For compatibility reasons,
you should have this information handy.
- Prioritize the features that you want to have and determine a maximum dollar amount you're willing to spend.
- When listening to various car stereo models, use one of your own CDs because you'll know exactly how it's supposed
to sound.
- If you're interested in listening to satellite radio now or in the future, be sure the model is satellite radio ready.
- Be sure the stereo will be compatible with your existing speakers or the speakers that you plan to purchase.
- When you've narrowed your choices down to a few models, leave the store. Yes! Perform an Internet search on your
choices to find out if previous buyers have experienced any problems with those stereos and find out their level of
satisfaction. You should also be able to find if there have been any recalls on those or similar models and any
known manufacturing defects.
- Know the installation costs. Inquire whether the stereo retailer offers installation, and if a discount is available. Know the
costs of installation before you okay them to perform it. You may be able to get it done for less somewhere else.
- If you have the stereo installed professionally, test it immediately to make sure all the speakers and components
work, and that it's securely mounted in or beneath the dashboard.
