We Know: How to Buy a Car Cover
Should I get a custom or universal-fit car cover?
Universal-fit car covers are usually cheaper than custom-fit covers. However, custom-fit covers
will make a tighter fit and most have grommet holes in the right place for your vehicle's antenna
as well as pockets for the side mirrors.
Because universal-fit car covers tend to be baggy, they are more likely to rub the paint and
allow moisture to leak inside. On windy days, they are also more likely to flap against the
vehicle and possibly cause damage to your car's finish.
Types of Car Covers
- Truck Cab Covers.
- Covers for Trucks with Shells.
- Outdoor Car Covers.
- Convertible Covers.
- Indoor Car Covers.
Buying Tips
When buying a car cover, keep these things in mind:
- A lightweight indoor car cover is best if you park your vehicle in a garage and need to use
the car cover often.
- For extended storage, use a heavier car cover.
- A thick, heavyweight exterior car cover is best when you are concerned about scratches and
dents from other cars or passersby.
- If you live in an area with a heavy rainfall, choose an outdoor car cover that is resistant
to water.
- For additional Ultraviolet protection, choose a reflective outdoor car cover.
- Choose an outdoor car cover that is resistant to salty air if you live near the ocean.
- Not all car covers are Earth tones. Some are quite colorful and may even match your vehicle's
color.
- Choose a lighter colored outdoor car cover if you live in an area that has a lot of hot, bright
sun.
- A lightweight outdoor car cover is good if you park your vehicle outside and need to use
the car cover often.
- Lighter colored fabric is easier on your vehicle's paint job if it too is light. Some car
covers that use a bright colored dye can bleed.
