We Know: How to Buy a Bookcase
About Bookcases
Bookcases can be strictly for storage, or they can be decorative accents in a room while also displaying cherished
books or other items. Bookcases can be quite elaborate or simple. While some choose to build their own bookcases, others
choose to invest in them as they would other pieces of furniture.
Bookcase Choices
When shopping for a bookcase, you'll have many options from which to choose:
- Number of shelves: Two, three, or five shelves are common. Some bookcases leave more height between shelves at
the bottom for storing larger books like picture books. Top shelves are sometimes narrower in height to accommodate
paperbacks.
- Types of wood materials: Maple, oak, cherry, walnut, and pine are commonly used to construct bookcases. They
can be purchased as finished or bare wood. Unfinished wood can be painted, stained, or allowed to age. A clear wood finish
can be applied to extend the look and condition of your unfinished wood bookcase.
- Wall mounted, folding, standalone.
- Pre-assembled or assembly required: Generally, transporting an unassembled bookcase is easier, and for
pre-assembled bookcases, a store may charge extra. When shipped, bookcases are unassembled.
- With trim or plain: Bookcases with extras like trim generally cost more but are more decorative and can be purchased
in the same style as your existing room furniture.
- Open or closed shelving: Though most book cases have open shelves, barrister's bookcases typically have glass
doors that lift vertically.
