About Baby Shoes
Baby shoes should protect a baby's feet, and keep them warm, but they shouldn't get in the way of a baby's first steps
as they learn to walk. Baby shoes need to be flexible enough that they can get a sense of their feet moving, but not so
flexible that their feet are unprotected. It may be best to have several types of shoes, depending on what the baby will
be doing, and where. For instance, indoor shoes as well as outdoor shoes.
Buying Tips for Baby Shoes
When shopping for baby shoes, keep the following in mind:
- Flexible soles: Flexible soles are easier for your baby to sense the ground than if they're wearing shoes with
inflexible soles.
- Traction: Suede and rubber are two common soles used to get good traction for baby shoes.
- Easy fastener: When the baby is too young to learn how to tie laces, the shoes should be easy to fasten but
not so easy that the baby can take the shoes off on their own. Some caregivers prefer Velcro straps, others like
elasticized ankles, and some prefer traditional laces.
- A good fit: The shoes should be snug but not tight, and the toes should have wiggle room. Keep in mind that
it's unlikely they'll wear out shoes before they outgrow them. After you purchase the shoes, periodically check that the
fit is still comfortable for the baby.
