We Know: All About Sciatica

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is a term that refers to pain along the sciatic nerve. It is most often described as causing pain in the lower back that radiates down the leg. It can also be characterized by a tingling sensation, weakness of the muscles and numbness of the side affected.

What causes sciatica?

Sciatica is caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down through the backs of both legs. Causes of this irritation include a herniated disk, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, aging, spinal stenosis and, in rare cases, a tumor.

How can sciatica be prevented?

It is hard to work on preventing sciatica while having a flare up, but once it passes, there are many things you can do to help prevent the irritation from reoccurring.

  • Sleep on a firm mattress.
  • Using ergonomic chairs with plenty of lower back support
  • Placing both feet flat on the floor when sitting.
  • Avoid sitting for extended periods of time.
  • If sitting a lot is necessary, cross your legs periodically to ensure no one side has more pressure placed on it than the other.
  • Exercise regularly.

How can sciatica be treated?

Sciatica is often treated with physical therapy. Strategic massage and exercises can help relieve the pressure on the sciatic nerve, reducing the likelihood of it being pinched and causing pain. Alternating between hot and cold packs can help ease the pain of sciatica and so can over-the-counter pain medications. In extreme cases where the condition is caused by a slipped disk, surgery is an option to relieve the pain. Many people also find relief with relaxation techniques such as yoga and acupressure as well.
