We Know: All About Nutritional Yeast

What is nutritional yeast?

Nutritional yeast is one of many types of yeast. Yeast is a fungus that changes starches and sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Yeast is often used to make beer, wine, and bread.

Two kinds of yeasts are used for nutritional purposes: nutritional yeast and brewer's yeast. Brewer's yeast is considered a food even though it's what remains after making alcohol. Brewer's yeast is easy for the body to digest and is high in nutrition. It's also rich in essential amino acids, B-complex vitamins, and minerals with a high amount of quality chromium. The most delicious nutritional yeasts are grown on sugar beets or molasses, which produces a non-bitter taste.

For what purposes is nutritional yeast taken?

There are no known side effects from using nutritional yeast, though some people are allergic to it. As with all supplements, consult your physician before taking them. Many use nutritional yeast for the following:

  • Treating diarrhea.
  • Treating adult acne.
  • Cheese substitute.
  • Vegan source of B vitamins.
  • As a condiment.

  1. Flakes: Recommended daily dosage is two tablespoons.
  2. Mini-flakes: Recommended daily dosage is 1.5 tablespoons.
  3. Powder: Recommended daily dosage is one heaping tablespoon. For recipes, use half the amount of flakes that are called for.
