We Know: All About Melatonin

What is Melatonin?

Melatonin is a substance secreted by the pineal gland in the brain. Its production helps the human body regulate the sleep-wake cycle. The amount of melatonin produced decreases with age. Melatonin supplements are made using a synthetic melatonin created in labs. There are a few supplements made using the melatonin from bovine sources, however these are not recommended because of the possibility of reactions.

Why Do People Take Melatonin Supplements?

Multiple studies have shown that Melatonin can help people fall asleep. It is most useful for those suffering from mild sleep disorders. Melatonin has also been proven effective in lessening the effects of jet lag. More research is being done to find support for claims that melatonin can strengthen the immune system and acts as an antioxidant.

How is Melatonin Different from Other Sleep Aids?

Melatonin is a natural sleep aid that promotes natural, normal sleep. Traditional sleep aids force the body to an abnormal state of unconsciousness, and the sleeper often wakes up feeling exhausted. Melatonin encourages the body to better regulate its own sleeps schedule so that the sleeper wakes up feeling alert and well rested.

Should Anyone Avoid Melatonin?

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid melatonin as its effects on an infant are unknown. Anyone with a serious health condition or severe allergies should consult their physician before taking melatonin. Women who are trying to become pregnant should not take melatonin because in high quantities it sometimes acts as a contraceptive

When Should Melatonin Be Taken?

Melatonin should be taken half an hour before bed time. Do not take it at times when you are not planning to go to sleep, because it can disturb your body's sleep cycle.
