We Know: All about Iodine and How it Works

What is Iodine?

Iodine is a corrosive, poisonous, halogen element that has radioactive isotopes. Although the definition of iodine makes it sound like something you would only see used in a mad scientist's laboratory, it is very useful in everyday life.

How is Iodine Used Medicinally?

The iodine that you find on the shelf at your neighborhood pharmacy is simply liquid containing iodine dissolved in ethyl alcohol and often used to cleanse wounds. Iodine should only be used to clean wounds that don't need to be covered with a bandage. Simply apply iodine to the area with a cotton ball and then let it dry thoroughly to prohibit infection.

How Can You Use Iodine around the House?

Iodine is found in many disinfectant wipes and sprays which can be used to effectively kill many germs and viruses around your house. Iodine can also be used in the treatment and purification of water. A few drops of iodine per liter of water can make it safe to drink. This can be a great way to prevent traveler's bug when you are visiting countries that don't always have safe water supplies.

How Can You Use Iodine to Entertain Your Kids?

By simply letting the alcohol in the iodine mixture evaporate in a clean container, the iodine will crystallize. This is a fun project to do with kids, but be sure to store the project while it is in progress in a well ventilated area and always supervise kids around the substance. With a little cornstarch, iodine, and water you can make invisible ink. Just heat some cornstarch and water to form a soupy paste and then write a secret message on a piece of paper using the mixture. To reveal the message mix a teaspoon of iodine with 10 teaspoons of water and sponge the liquid over the paper and let dry. The message will magically appear in brilliant purple ink.
