All About International Health Insurance

What is International Health Insurance?

Also called Government sponsored health insurance, International health is insurance that will cover sickness and emergency treatment while you're traveling or living outside the United States or your country of residency. This insurance is necessary because medical facilities in other countries will not necessarily except your insurance policy. The medical facilities that will accept your insurance may seriously limit your overseas care.

What type of International Health Insurance should I consider?

There are three basic levels of a International Healthcare Insurance, they are:

  • Health and accident insurance pays for doctor and hospital bills, and dental care. This insurance policy can be good for one day two of six months and supplement your normal health care plan.
  • Medical evacuation insurance is an additional insurance one would take in the chance they would need to be medically evacuated from a location.
  • Trip cancellation or interruption insurance reimburses the holder should they need to cancel or interrupt A trip. This is often used for of cruises and vacation packages. You can also purchase accident insurance available at airports in the rare event of death due to a plane crash.

What are my options if I plan to take more than one trip?

You can purchase Multi-Trip plans if you regularly take several trips within one year. These plans usually cover about 60 to 70 days of your combined trips within a year's time. If you regularly take multiple trips for your company or if they have more 40 employees, they can provide international travel insurance through group plan on your behalf.

Should my International Health Insurance be my primary or secondary coverage?

If your primary insurance has few exclusions, then secondary coverage will work fine for international travel. Otherwise, you would want your international health insurance to be your primary insurance.

What possible exclusions should I be aware of?

Your international health insurance may exclude preexisting medical conditions. Accidents and injuries related to high-risk sports activities or travel agency advice of a doctor may also be excluded. In addition, you may be required to pay a deductible or Co-Insurance percentage.
