We Know: All About Hoodia

What is Hoodia?

Hoodia, or hoodia gordonii, is from a cactus-like plant that only grows wild only in South Africa's Kalahari Desert. Efforts to grow the plant in places besides the Kalahari Desert have been unsuccessful. It was originally discovered and used by South African bushmen to suppress their appetite while on hunting trips. It causes the brain to believe that the stomach is full.

Limited clinical and lab testing has been performed and, while it appears to be inconclusive, the results appear to be that hoodia works in suppressing the appetite. There are also no known side effects with taking hoodia.

The active ingredient in hoodia has been identified as P57, but efforts to make a synthetic version of P57 have not been successful. The drug company Pfizer attempted to for awhile but gave up because they didn't believe it would be too expensive to develop for mass production. A lot of products on the market today that claim to contain hoodia either don't contain any of it, or not enough for it to work. Legitimate products will have a C.I.T.E.S certificate issued either from Chromadex Labs or Alkemists Pharmaceuticals.
