We Know: All About Hair Surgery

What is hair surgery?

Hair surgery is a process that includes several different treatment options designed to restore the hair to persons who have a family history of balding, have had scalp trauma, or have hair loss due to aging and hormonal changes. Cosmetic surgeons often customize the treatments they use to suit the individual patient's hair loss pattern.

What causes hair loss?

Hair loss can be caused by a variety of reasons. Most often, the loss of hair is a genetic condition passed on from one generation to the next. However, hair loss can also just spontaneously occur due to aging and hormonal changes. Sometimes, if there are burns or injury committed to the scalp, hair loss may be the result.

What are the different types of hair surgery?

Hair surgery treatment uses the latest in technology and science to create the most real-looking hair for the patient. Some of the types include:

  • Hair Transplants: Scalp and hair is removed from the back or sides of head and placed in the area that is losing hair. Small holes are made in the scalp in which the donor grafts are placed in hopes the hair will take root and grow.
  • Skin Lifts: A flap of scalp is made from skin that still grows hair and is moved to the balding part of the scalp.
  • Scalp Reduction: The area of the scalp that is balding is lifted and closed by pulling the skin together. This decreases the size of the balding area.

What are risks associated with hair surgery?

As with any surgery, hair surgery carries with it some level of risk. Infection is always a possibility. Bleeding and excessive scarring can also be a problem for some. Likewise, there is always the risk that the skin grafts will not take and the procedure may need to be repeated.
