We Know: The Facts on Garlic and Garlic Supplements

About Garlic and Garlic Supplements

Garlic bulbs can be used fresh or dried and made into concentrated powder and used for medicinal purposes. Garlic extract is also sometimes used. The active ingredient in garlic supplements is allicin, (not to be confused with alliin that many garlic supplements also contain) which is released by garlic when it's exposed to water, cut, or crushed. The shelf life of allicin isn't long, and those supplements containing higher amounts of allicin are more likely to be effective.
