We Know: All About Flaxseed

What is Flaxseed?

Flax is a plant which has been cultivated since ancient times both for the plant which is used to make the fabric linen, and for its grain, flaxseed. Even in ancient times, it was known by many to have health related benefits. Flaxseed is sometimes referred to as linseed.

What are the Health Benefits of Flaxseed?

The seed of the flax plant, flaxseed, contains omega-3 fatty acid, fiber and a compound called lignen, an antioxidant that may help prevent heart disease. Omega-3 fatty acids prevent blood clots that can lead to a stroke or heart attack. Fiber, particularly the soluble type found in flaxseed, is known to lower cholesterol levels. The antioxidant lignen, in addition to being an antioxidant, is increasingly gaining notice as a cancer preventative. Flaxseed oil contains alpha-linolenic acid that is known for its benefits to the heart.

Which is Better, Flaxseeds or Flaxseed Oil?

Whole, ground flaxseed grains contain fiber, which flaxseed oil does not. For best results, flaxseed should be ground; otherwise it may not be digested. An electric coffee grinder works well for this purpose. Buying already ground flaxseed is not recommended, as they loose their nutritional properties quickly once ground. Despite its lack of fiber, flaxseed oil can be easily used as a substitute in cooking for other oils, making it very easy to integrate into the diet.

How can Flaxseed be Used Every Day?

  • Use ground, fresh flaxseed in muffins, pancakes, and bread or on top of casseroles.
  • Mix finely ground flaxseed with orange juice or into a nutritional shake.
  • Use ground flaxseed to top cold or hot cereal.
  • Try sprinkling ground flaxseed on top of cooked vegetables.
  • Flaxseed oil can be used to make salad dressings, and is also excellent with pasta. It can be used in place of olive oil in almost any recipe and has a nutty flavor.
