We Know: How to Buy a Commode Chair
About Commode Chairs
Commode chairs are used to help people whose physical challenges do not enable them to make trips to the bathroom. A
commode chair is often kept at the bedside for their safety and convenience.
Types of Commode Chairs
There are several types of commode chairs, and they include:
- Drop arm: This style of commode has armrests that drop down. This is convenient in confined areas and makes
the transfer to and from the commode easier. They range in price from $150-$265.
- Over the toilet: This is a raised seat type of commode and is placed over the toilet. They range in price
from $45-$70.
- Extra wide, bariatric, or heavy duty: For users who need a commode that is strong enough to support their
extra weight. The seating area is also larger. They range in price from $200-$250.
- Folding commode: This style of commode folds for traveling. They range in price from
$120-$150.
- All-in-one: This is a multi-purpose commode chair that can be used as a toilet safety frame, a raised toilet
seat with arms, or as a bedside commode. They range in price from $60-$100.
- Purpose designed commode: This type of commode is disguised as a stylish armchair, and is often made of
polished wood vinyl. The seat top removes to reveal the non-spill potty. They range in price from $200-$400.
- Rehab shower: This commode chair type can be used as a shower chair, over the toilet commode, or a portable
commode because it folds. They range in price from $150-$1100.
Available Features for Commode Chairs
When shopping for a commode chair, look for some of these available features:
- For commode chairs that attach to the toilet seat, non-skid pads help keep the seat in place. Also look for
some sort of locking device that can clip on and be tightened with one hand.
- Make sure that the weight capacity is sufficient for the user. Each commode chair will list its weight limitation.
- Proper hygiene is easier when the front recess has some depth or a greater opening.
- A commode pail that includes a lid.
- Arms for the commode that may or may not fold down. This provides extra security.
- Splash shield.
- An armrest for the user's comfort.
