There are many different types of drops available over-the-counter but it may be best to see an eye doctor to find out which type is best for your condition. It is important to remember to use the eye drops consistently in order to maintain a well-lubricated eye. Punctal Occlusion: This procedure can be either temporary or permanent. In order to help tears that are produced remain around the eye rather than draining into the nasal cavity, punctual occlusion involves small plugs being inserted into the tear duct drain. Duct Surgery: As a last resort, chronic dry eye suffers can opt to have the drains on their tear ducts closed. This allows more tears to remain around the eye, increasing overall comfort.
