We Know: All about Alpha Hydroxy

What is alpha hydroxy?

Alpha hydroxy acids are used to rejuvenate skin. They work as an exfoliant to shed dead skin cells in order for new skin to grow. Milk and fruit sugars naturally produce alpha hydroxy acids. Because they are easily absorbed by skin, lactic acid and glycolic acid are the two most popular types of alpha hydroxy acids. Alpha hydroxy acids are commonly found in cleansers, masks, moisturizers, and toners.

What affects can I expect when using alpha hydroxy?

Affects will not be immediate, but after using it for several months on a daily basis, you can expect to see the following on the areas it is applied:

  • A general softening of skin whereas before it was rough.
  • Wrinkling can be mitigated, though this seems to work more for some people than others and may be neutralized by extended exposure to sunlight.
  • The production of elastin and collagen may increase.

What should I know about using alpha hydroxy?

You should be aware of the following things when using alpha hydroxy:

  1. For some who use alpha hydroxy acids, an increase in sun sensitivity may occur along with skin irritation. Itching, pain, redness, scarring, and burning are all possible side effects.
  2. Scarring as a result of using alpha hydroxy acids is more likely for those with darker colored skin.
  3. Sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection must be applied because of the skin's greater sensitivity to sunlight when using alpha hydroxy acids.
  4. A concentration of 5-8% of alpha hydroxy acids and a pH of 3-4 is the ideal balance for skin care products.
