A dental implant is an artificial root that the dentist puts into your jaw beneath your gum to hold an artificial replacement tooth or bridge in place. Because an implant doesn't rely on a nearby tooth for support, it's usually better than a traditional bridge.

What kinds of implants are there?

There are two ways of attaching the artificial root to the jaw.

Endosteal implants put screws, cylinders or blades directly into the jawbone so that artificial teeth can be attached.
Subperiopsteal implants are less common and place the artificial roots onto the jaw bone.

If you've lost a tooth from an injury or gum disease or for a number of other reasons, and you have good dental health otherwise, an implant may be appropriate.
